Gareth P was chosen as the overall winner of the Blue Peter Paralympics ‘Postcard to Beijing’ competition. The prize was to travel to Beijing and feature in the London 2012 Handover segment during the Closing Ceremony of the Paralympic Games.
Gareth had this to say after the experience:
”I was a little bit nervous as we all got into our costumes but when the fireworks started I was really excited. Ade Adepitan and I were the first to go into the Stadium. He was fun to work with and really looked after me. How can you not like Ade? It was quite scary going onto the track with 90,000 people looking at you and with the lights it was very hot. We couldn't actually see if the bus had gone in because it was on the other side of the stadium with loads of people in front of it! Everyone loved our 2012 London bus because it is such a happy bus. I really enjoyed waving the bus into its right place and it stopping when I told it to. The time just flew past. It was totally different to what I had expected – much, much better in fact.
I've seen it a bit on Chinese TV, on the news. It was really funny to see me because when you watch TV you're usually watching other people, so seeing yourself is so strange.
It's been an amazing trip. The best bits were going to see the pandas...going to the Forbidden City, and the Great Wall of China: I also really liked eating scorpion and snake which I did today – they were really nice… I preferred scorpion – it's really chewy and there's not much meat.
Plus I got to meet people like Seb Coe and Boris Johnson. I also got to see some great sport - Wheelchair Rugby, Swimming and Wheelchair Basketball, they were all really good. I liked the Wheelchair Rugby best because it was fun how different it is from normal rugby – the ball's different, how you score points is different – all of that. I'd like to have a go at it myself. When I get home I'm going to tell my friends about everything I've done and I'm going to make sure they try to get tickets when the Games come to London! It's going to be great”
Luke G was successfully selected from auditions to become an extra in the children’s television programme ‘Lazy Town’, via Whizzkidz. Luke’s television appearance will be shown on Wednesday 15th October 2008 at 4.00pm on Cbeebies.
Mum said: “we were put up in a really nice hotel, with lovely food before filming, then sent off to Colchester Zoo for the day where it was all going to happen. We met the zoo keeper who talked us through the filming procedure and then we met ‘Ziggy’ (one of the characters!). It was a long day, about four hours filming for about four minutes on tele but Luke enjoyed it and is now offering free autographs!”.
“Well done to Gareth and Luke, it sounds like you have both had a fantastic time and lots of fun!!”.
James P-G was very brave when he visited the dentist recently. He loved moving up and down in the dentists chair and playing ‘dentists’ at home with mum. James has also managed to play Frere Jacque on his organ from memory - no song book needed! Well done James, that’s fantastic!!
Gareth P has won the 6-8 Paralympics category and was one of the overall winners in the “Postcard to Beijing Competition” that he entered. The overall winner has the chance in a lifetime opportunity to go to Beijing in China and take part in the Paralympic Games Handover Ceremony in a stadium of 91,000 people, in front of a worldwide audience of TV viewers!! Congratulations Gareth, you must be very excited! What a fantastic opportunity for you to be involved in. We are all so pleased for you. Please let us know how you get on and we look forward to seeing you on the television in the Summer!!
Gareth P has successfully auditioned for Leckhampton School choir and will be singing at this years ‘Mayor Making’ ceremony and at Tewkesbury Abbey. Well done Gareth, hopefully some of our members will come and watch you perform!!
'Blue Peter Postcard to Bejing' Gareth P entered the above and he has got down to the last 18 finalists. There are 2 competitions; Olympics and Para-Olympics. Gareth has entered for the Para-Olympics. The winner has to go to the closing ceremony in China and be part of the handing over ceremony for London 2012. Mum and Dad were a little stunned as Gareth wrote his card himself (with Mum and Dad only adapting spellings for him). The chances of him winning is not huge but as far as Mum and Dad are concerned he has already won. He had a go and entered and has won his Blue Peter badge (very important to Gareth) and hopefully will meet Adi Adipan, one of the judges whom Gareth absolutely adores. China would just be an added extra but he has already achieved two of his goals. “Gareth this is a fabulous achievement and making it into the school choir too, we all wish you the best of luck!”.
