About Counselling

Why do people use a counselling service?

  • Sometimes people feel their lives are not going as they would want them to.
  • Our feelings sometimes overwhelm us and we don’t know why
  • We have problems and they won’t go away
  • We have a problem we don’t seem able to sort out
  • Relationships are not what we would like them to be

If this rings true to you, you might want to talk to a counsellor

What is Counselling?

  • Helping us see things more clearly
  • A way to help us deal with a problem more successfully
  • Helping raise our confidence in dealing with things
  • Helping us find solutions
  • Helping us to find a way to change aspects of our lives we are unhappy with

Counselling is NOT:

  • Giving people advice
  • Solving problems for people
  • Counselling is not someone else fixing things for us

Does it work?

  • We can’t change what has happened, but we can change the way we go on letting it affect us
  • Sometimes talking things out is the best way forward
  • Someone we are not close to can help because they are not involved

What happens in Counselling?

  • The Counsellor works with you to help you find a way forward
  • The Counsellor respects your dignity and your right to decide
  • The Counsellor is trained to help you explore and search out solutions

Is Counselling confidential?

  • We offer a confidential service. Nothing said in the counselling situation can be used elsewhere
  • If there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others we would not be able to keep it confidential
  • Your counsellor will explain this fully when you meet
