I went into hospital on April 25th to have a full abdominal hysterectomy to get rid of endometriosis. After I had it done they discovered they had nicked my bladder so days later I was taken down and re-operated on, through the same scar, so you can imagine slightly painful! Cut a long story short, I ended up in hospital for nearly 3 weeks and in that time had two ops, a blood transfusion, two systograms and an x-ray, and my bowel went to sleep which isn't nice! But for my bladder to heal I had to wear this catheter for 5 weeks that included going on holiday in a wheelchair and wearing this wee bag strapped to my leg! Also with Luke being in a wheelchair poor old Shaun (my husband) had to push me, with Luke on my lap in one big wheelchair around Torquay! Quite funny now when I look back on it, not at the time though as you can imagine. Slowly things got better. Just to say, through all of this, I had no help from social services with Luke. They told me because I wanted short term help they didn't have enough funding (what a joke!) so my family had to take turns for weeks looking after me and Luke. For anyone who doesn't know me, I have Luke who is 6yrs old and has spinal muscular atrophy which is a progressive neuromuscular condition so he is in a wheelchair full time. But otherwise he is just the same as any other cheeky 6 year old! Anyway after all this me and Luke’s dad got married 9 weeks later. I never thought I would get through it, it really knocked the hell out of me, but as you know when you have a child or children with special needs it tends to make you stronger and more determined. Well it has me anyway; what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. You can get through most things when you put your mind to it. Just some advice to any mothers or fathers with special children; if your due to have an op, plan ahead like I did, and don't rely too much on social services, they are useless! To be honest, a joke! Hope you enjoyed my story.
